235mph Electric Lucid Air Due in 2019
An all-electric saloon that will mix sports car performance with luxury saloon comfort is due to arrive in 2019. The Lucid Air is claimed to have a 400-mile range, a 0-62mph time of 2.5 seconds and a twin-motor four-wheel drive system with an astounding 1000bhp.
Lucids chief technical officer Peter Rawlinson is the former engineering boss for Lotus, Jaguar and Tesla and has set the Air’s sights on the luxury performance saloon market. The Air used the BMW 750Li as a benchmark for its cabin space, resulting in a product with similar interior dimensions. Marketing Manager David Salguero highlights that: “By miniaturising the EV powertrain, we can make [the Air] small on the outside but big on the inside. It will have a large, comfortable, spacious interior, comparable [in size] to the S-Class long-wheelbase, while being about the same size as an E-Class.”
During testing the Air reached 235mph and in its top spec form will reach 62mph in 2.5 seconds. The Air will be offered in at least two variants, the entry level model will use one motor and offer 250bhp and a 240 mile range, whereas its bigger sibling will have two motors, nearly 1000bhp and a claimed range of 400 miles. 10’000 models are set to be built in 2019, with a projected 60’000 units to be built annually going forward.
Prices are set to start at £39,653 and European and UK models have been confirmed, however no official date has been set as of yet.
