The Abarth 124 Spider

The Abarth version of the Fiat 124 Spider has been released in the UK. Abarth is the performance-based off-shoot of Fiat. The Abarth Spider is faster, more powerful and receives sportier styling.

The powertrain is Fiat’s original 1.4-litre MultiAir four-cylinder turbo engine, tweaked to produce an increased 168bhp and 184lb ft of torque. The car’s performance has been boosted, delivering 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 148mph. The Spider is available with a either a six-speed manual or ‘Sequenziale Sportivo’ paddle-shift automatic transmission with ‘Sport’ mode.

The lightweight foundation for the Abarth Spider is taken from Mazda’s MX-5 platform, and comes with a new, sportier ‘Record Monza’ exhaust system. The uprated Abarth receives limited slip differential and stiffer a suspension system, which features double wishbones at the front.  Other upgrades include larger anti-roll bars, larger Brembo brakes and Bilstein dampers.

The styling of the Abarth version is more aggressive than Fiat’s original. The car receives a new front bumper with larger air intakes, a new rear spoiler and a rear bumper with diffuser.  A visibility pack adds LED DRLS, automatic lights and rear parking sensors, for an added premium.

There is a choice of 5 retro-inspired colours, including Costa Brava 1972 Red, Turini 1975 White, with the bonnet available in matt black, like the iconic original. The ‘Heritage Look’ pack is free, and the car comes standard with Sat-Nav, Cruise control, Bluetooth and climate control.

The standard model, with a six-speed manual transmission starts at £29,565 and the automatic ‘Sequenziale Sportivo’ model will set you back £31,605.
