BMW unveil celebratory 2002 Hommage Concept

BMW revealed another Hommage Concept at the Concorso d’Eleganza. The 2002 Hommage Concept is based on a modern M2, redesigned to pay tribute the 1960s and 1970s 2002 turbo, which affirmed BMW’s Success.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic 2002 turbo, BMW have reimagined the M2 by harking back to the retro model in styling, while keeping the technology strictly modern.

The one-off Hommage concept sits on the same low and long wheelbase as the M2 Coupe, however the bodykit has been beefed up adding a wider stature, like that of the original 2002. The Concept features BMW’s traditional ‘Shark-nose’ with a front splitter and three air intakes. Large front and rear spoilers, oversized wheel-arches as well as short overhangs are present to echo the originals’ distinctive styling.

The Hommage features single outboard headlights and a carbonfibre strip runs around the shoulder line of the exterior bringing a modern twist to the original’s Chrome strip. The strip divides the car’s body into two distinct parts with separate paint finishes, the upper uses matt paint and the lower uses a high gloss finish, both in ‘Space Race Metal Blue’.

The concept runs on the same 3.0-litre single-turbo straight-six engine as M2, producing 370bhp and 369lb ft of torque. Modern BMW elements include 20-inch alloys with gold painted M calipers, quad exhaust pipes and the M3’s pistons and bearings.

The 2002 Hommage was unveiled at the Villa d’Este in Italy, where BMW has released most of the Hommage Concept collection.
