BMW’s Big Plan

BMW’s Big Plan

As part of their celebration of 20 years of production in the U.S, BMW announced their plans for the X7; a luxury seven seated SUV for late 2018, expected to cost around £65,000. The X7 will be envisioned as a rival for the Mercedes-Benz GL and Range Rovers, despite the latter not actually having seven seats. The X7 will be produced at their U.S plant and BMW believe this will reaffirm their commitment to America. China and the U.S are thought to be their largest potential markets as they have more demand for larger SUV’s. BMW are unable to confirm the platform the X7 will use at this stage; however it is possible it will be a modified version of the next generation 7 Series model which is due in late 2015. As BMW introduce aluminium and carbon fibre into their manufacturing, the weight of the X7 is anticipated to be as light as the smaller X5. The X7 will use six cylinder V8 and V12 engines and will be offered as a 4-wheel drive only. BMW plan to invest £600 million to their Spartanburg plant between now and 2016, which will enable them to increase their capacity from 300,000 vehicles to 450,000 and create around 800 new jobs.
