Classics making a killing – Mercedes-Benz sells for $6.6m

RM Sotheby’s announced the total takings of $53 million from their most recent auction. This Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster stole the show.

The return on classics appears to keep on climbing and more amazing models hit the docket. RM Sotheby’s Arizona auction was topped by a 1939 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Special Roadster which went for a whopping $6.6m.  The car is unique; it was commissioned by Rolf Horn of Gebruder Horn in Berlin. His family were renowned art collectors and owned art and interior décor boutiques. He had a lot of input into the design and finish of the one-off car.

The Special Roadsters were extremely rare, only 25 were built between 1935 -1939 and this is even believed to be the last. Horn’s was even more special as it was fitted with a rare 5-speed transmission. Horn altered the styling and added design features making the car more aesthetically pleasing. The car is finished in rich dark blue which is complemented by the interior leatherwork. The car has great history and has had a few prominent owners, who have kept the car in great condition.

Other notable sales from RM Sotheby’s auction include a beautiful 1069 Ferrari 365 GTS which sold for $3.6m and a more recent 1995 Ferrari F50 taking $3.1m.
