Iconic Le Mans Porsche 917K set for auction

Famed for its appearance in the Steve McQueen Le Mans movie, this highly sought-after Porsche 917K will be auctioned by Gooding and Company at Pebble Beach on the 18th August for an estimated $13,000,000 – $16,000,000.

Formerly owned by Porsche racer, Jo Siffert, the car was loaned to Solar Productions for the 1971 Le Mans film, where it was used as a high speed camera car and also in various action scenes throughout the movie.

The car was originally one of the first 25 long-tail 917s, but was converted following testing to a 917K (‘K’ for kurz, or short tail).  Chassis 917-024 was sold to a French collector following Siffert’s death in 1971, who stored it for more than 25 years.  It was rediscovered in 2001 and fully restored by Swiss specialist Graber Sportgarage, who completed the work earlier this year.
