Lexus NX: Tough Competition Ahead

Lexus NX: Tough Competition Ahead

Lexus have announced pricing and specifications for their new NX Crossover on sale now in the UK with first deliveries starting in October. As an intended rival for the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X3 and the Audi Q5, the new NX300h S model is on sale with a starting price from £29,495. In March 2015, an NX200t variant is intended for production, which is expected to be powered by a 2.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine. Although no performance details have been revealed yet, it is to be assumed the NX300h will use the same 2.5 litre four cylinder petrol engine, combined with an electric motor, as Lexus’s 15300h saloon. This combination is expected to produce a total output of 223hp which will enable the model to accelerate from 0-62mph in 9 seconds. Granted, the new Lexus is not the fastest; however thanks to the hybrid engine it is efficient, with a claimed range of 65.7mpg.

Available as a front wheel drive only, this trim level is given 17 inch alloy wheels, low beam LED headlights, a pre-crash safety system, a touch-screen multimedia system and a DAB digital radio. Above this, sits two further models; the F sport and Premier specification. The F Sport priced at £36,995 offers more supportive seats, a bespoke suspension system, a powered boot and a wireless smartphone charging system.  Alternatively, the range topping £42,995 Premier model features heated and ventilated electric seats with a memory function for the driver, a Mark Levinson radio, Satnav, a 360 degree camera for help whilst manoeuvring, automatic high beam headlights and an improved safety system including Lexus lane assist and rear cross traffic alert.

In 2013, the Lexus concept shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show was presented with many unclear lines, which caused it to fail to impress on a styling level. This production version has been toned down, removing many creases from the flanks to present a much more stylish final design. Despite this, in such a busy market, Lexus will not have an easy time competing against the likes of the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X3 and the Audi Q5.
