Long-awaited BMW i8 Roadster revealed

BMW have finally revealed a long-awaited soft-top version of its i8 hybrid supercar, to sit alongside the previously announced updated i8 Coupe. Both versions receive subtle visual and mechanical upgrades, as well as a longer EV range and of course a compact fabric unit for the roadster.

Thanks to the i8’s rigid carbonfibre tub construction, the roadster only weighs 60kg more than the Coupe. The compact folding fabric roof slips seamlessly away thanks to the new floating rear buttresses. Cosmetically, the new i8 benefits from two new colour options, redesigned 20-inch alloys and laser headlights. The i8 also receives the latest technology with BMW’s ‘Display Key’ and the latest iDrive infotainment system.

Prospective buyers will be pleased to know more significant changes have taken place under the bonnet. An upgraded battery pack sees a 50% electric only range increase, now at 34 miles. An extra 12bhp has also been squeezed out of the electric motor, which sits alongside the unchanged, mid-mounted 1.5-litre turbocharged three cylinder petrol engine. These improvements result in a combined power output of 374bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.4 seconds. The i8’s trump card is the claimed mpg. The hybrid supercar is quoted at 149.8mpg and 134.5mpg for the Coupe and Roadster respectively.

The new i8 is on sale from January 2018 and will be priced at £112’730 for the Coupe and £124’730 for the Roadster.
