McLaren Unveil Restored F1 GTR ‘25R’

McLaren has marked the launch of its new F1 authentication service by unveiling this fully restored ‘25R’ GTR racer.

This particular example famously retired from the Le Mans race in 1997 after catching fire with a severed fuel line, but went on to race competitively for another eight years.  After such a long career, the F1 was in need of a rebuild, and as one of only three 1997 GTRs built for the Gulf-Davidoff team, the owners turned to McLaren for their expertise and ability to replace the car’s many unique parts.

The McLaren Special Operations team carried out the rebuild, which took 24 months to complete, restoring the 25R to its 1997 Le Mans specification.  The factory had many of the original parts held in storage for over 20 years, and among a host of features, the 25R is equipped with the same tall gear ratios that were designed for Le Mans and a blue roof identification light.

The new F1 Certified programme includes a certificate of authenticity for owners, a custom illustrated book charting the car’s career and detailed information on any upgrades that were sanctioned by the factory.
