Smarter, Sharper, Ligher – Meet the New BMW 5 Series

BMW have released new images of their latest 5 Series, due to hit showrooms in 2017.  Boasting a smarter, more angular look, the updated model will go head to head with the Jaguar’s new high tech XF.

The new 5 Series will feature an impressive range of autonomous tech, including remote parking which doesn’t require anyone sitting behind the wheel, and gesture control for adjusting the radio and taking Bluetooth calls.

The redesigned 5 Series will also be considerably lighter than the current model, shedding around 220 pounds thanks its lightweight carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) construction.

Power options will include a new family of 2.0 and 3.0 litre petrol and diesel engines, as well a plug-in hybrid version producing 242bhp.  The replacement for the current tri-turbo 3.0 litre six cylinder diesel will reportedly deliver nearly 400bhp.

It is rumoured that the next 5 Series will be offered with BMW’s new 1.5 litre petrol and diesel turbocharged three-cylinder engines, as the manufacturer seeks to reduce overall emissions below the 95g/km CO2 threshold being proposed by the EU for 2020.  However BMW are yet to announce the final engine line-up.
