Mercedes-AMG reveal Project One hypercar at Frankfurt motor show

Mercedes-AMG have unveiled their eagerly awaited hypercar at the 2017 Frankfurt motor show. The brand are keen to emphasise the car isn’t just a hypercar that has benefitted from technology trickled down from Formula One, it is a Formula One car that’s been reconfigured to be used on the road.

The Project One uses an F1 turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol V6 with direct injection, just like its bigger sister in the Mercedes Formula One car; however the engine has been dialled back to a still impressive, 11,000rpm red line, compared to 13,500rpm in its bigger sister. With a V6 powering the back wheels, this leaves each front wheel available to be powered by an electric motor delivering 120kW. This hybrid combination leads to a total power output of 1000+bhp, which will be delivered through a new 8 speed transmission and emitted through an exhaust system similar to a Formula One car, with a single tailpipe, but unlike its big sister, is required to be fitted with a silencer and a catalytic converter.

The exterior of the car takes inspiration from and utilises design features found on a Formula One car. A roof mounted intake system feeds the engine with additional oxygen, as well as front intakes and three mechanically operated slats over the front wheels that can open up and alleviate pressure from the front arches.

Mercedes-AMG CEO Tobias Moers reflects on the upcoming Project One, ‘We have an F1 engine that is used to idling at 4500rpm, now idling at 1100rpm; it still revs to 11,000rpm in the road car. It is still a 1.6-litre F1 engine, with the original crankcase and cylinder heads. We have to change the injectors, and reduce the compression ratio a little, but that’s it. You don’t need an F1 team to get the car started; you hit the button and it fires up, on 98 octane – or maybe 95.’

Mercedes-AMG have announced 275 units will be created, priced at €2.3 million each, with first deliveries expected in 2019.
