Mercedes-AMG unveil range-topping GT R
The hotly anticipated AMG GT R made its world debut at Mercedes-Benz World, Brooklands. The GT R takes inspiration from its GT 3 racing sibling; it is the most powerful road-going car yet from the German marque.
The GT R will compete with Porsche’s GT3 RS and is more performance-focused than ever before. The car has been tested and tuned at the famous Nurburgring circuit and receives advanced technology and race-inspired aerodynamics.
Power is driven to all four wheels by a 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 engine, with the new turbos set up in a ‘hot inside V’ formation to boost the car’s output to 577bhp and 516lb ft of torque. Mercedes claim the new GT is capable of delivering 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds and a flat out speed of 198mph. The GT R receives AMG’s speed-shift 7 speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox and three adaptive modes of suspension.
The Mercedes is lighter than before (1,555kgs), due to a revised body with plenty of carbon fibre parts and a new lightweight exhaust system. The car receives electronic limited-slip differential and has a rear-swung 47:53 weight distribution and active rear-wheel steering, making the GT R’s handling exciting and agile.
In terms of styling, the car features a new ‘Panamerica’ slatted grille, double rear diffuser, bigger air intakes, active front splitter and a large rear wing. Michelin Cup 2 tyres are wrapped around the new lightweight 10-spoke wheels. The cabin, is finished in leather and microfiber trim. The GT R is given bucket seats and new yellow seatsbelts and stitching.
The new model goes on sale in November, with first deliveries expected in March 2017. Pricing is yet to be released, but should be in the region of £150,000.
