The New BMW 5 Series
BMW has unveiled its seventh-generation 5 Series, featuring new technology and updated styling. The new model will make its public debut at the 2017 Detroit Motor Show.
The new model is lighter than its predecessor, includes an extended engine line-up and is heavily influenced by the new 7 Series’ styling. The new 5 Series is built using a mixture of lightweight materials including steel, magnesium and aluminium, resulting in a 100kg reduction in weight.
The exterior has been updated with sleeker, sharper lines inspired by the 2017 BMW range. The car features a new active kidney grille, new C-Pillars and additional LED head and tail lights. The new model is longer and wider than the outgoing model, providing more interior space for passengers. The interior seats have been redesigned to accommodate the new shape and boot space has increased to 530 litres.
The engine range has been extended to include a new plug-in hybrid option, as well as a range of petrol and diesel options. The range now features engines specifications starting at the 188bhp 520d Xdrive to the most powerful 462bhp V8 twin-turbo M550i xDrive capable of 0-62mph in 4 seconds. Top speed is limited to 155mph across the range. Depending on engine choice the 5 Series comes with a six-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed automatic transmission.
The cabin features the latest in BMW’s smart technology and semi-autonomous driving systems, including gesture control, the intelligent key, a 10.25-inch display and infotainment system. The 16 speaker Bower and Wilkins system is an optional extra. The car features active anti-roll dynamic drive, steering and lane keeping assistance and intelligent speed assist.
Pricing is yet to be released but are expected to be marginally more expensive than the out-going model. The new BMW 5 Series will be on sale from February 2017.
