NIO EP9 electric hypercar claims Nurburgring record

A new production car lap record has been set at the Nurburgring by the NIO EP9 hypercar.

The Chinese-manufactured electric car knocked over 6 seconds off the time recently set by the Lamborghini Huracan Performante, completing the lap in a blistering 6m 45.9s.  Announcing the incredible feat, Gerry Hughes, Head of NIO’s Performance Program, said, “This is a fabulous achievement for NIO and I am very proud of the team that has worked tirelessly to achieve this accolade.”

The NIO EP9 already holds the Nurburgring record for the fastest electric car, completing the lap in 7m 05.12s in October 2016, in spite of bad weather at the time.  The car generates a whole megawatt of power, the equivalent of 1,341bhp, allowing it to sprint from 0-62mph in 2.7s, hitting a ‘gear-limited’ top speed of 194mph.

NIO are already building an initial batch of 6 EP9s, with a second batch of 10 recently announced.  Each car is made to order, priced at £1.15m.
