P13: Purely For Drivers
New details have been released on the McLaren P13 which is to be revealed at the Geneva Motor Show ahead of its launch in 2015. The P13 will be considered an entry-level model, below the current 12C model and will be recognised as a car especially for drivers. The P13 will be smaller and weigh less than the 1400kg 12C, with its design being influenced by the P1. The P13 will incorporate a twin-turbocharged V8 engine and is claimed to beat the Porsche 911 Turbo on performance. The P13 hosts a carbonfibre chassis with a seven-speed automatic dual clutch. The P13 has a top speed of 185mph and is claimed to reach 0-60mph in less than 4 seconds. McLaren anticipate the P13 will give them a technical lead over Porsche and Ferrari. McLaren expect to produce variants of the P13 including a spyder model and a high-performance model which will support taking their total annual output to over 4000 cars, positioning them in a strong place to generate returns for their investors. With total start-up funds close to £500 million, McLaren have ensured they factored in development costs from the beginning, consequently allowing them to offer the P13 for £120,000, a much lower price than the 12C Coupe.
