Spotted: The new Audi R8 Spyder
The new, second generation Audi R8 Spyder has been spotted ahead of its debut later this month.
Spy shots show the 2016 Spyder will be a soft-top folding variant, like its predecessor, with buttresses on both sides and a retractable rear window. Weight savings are likely, as seen in the new Coupe.
The Spyder should feature the same naturally-aspirated V10 engine as the Coupe, and is expected to come in two models; the V10 and the V10 Plus. The V10 will output 532bhp, while the V10 Plus will deliver 601bhp. In common with the Lamborghini Huracan, the new R8 will be based on a four-wheel drive chassis and features cylinder deactivation. Performance on the 0-62mph sprint is expected to be less than 3.5 seconds for the V10, and under 3.2 seconds for the V10 Plus.
In terms of styling, the new Spyder features the same angular headlights, gaping grille, diffuser, carbon air vents, exhaust system and distinctive gilles in the bodywork. Internally, the cabin appears to include Audi’s virtual cockpit display and a steering-mounted red start button.
The new soft-top will be launched at the New York Motor Show in March, with first UK deliveries in early 2017. The Spyder V10 will carry a £10,000 premium above the £119,500 Coupe, with the V10 Plus priced at £137,500.
