Winning Ford GT40 heads to auction with $12m estimate
One of the three winning GT40’s from the 1966 Le Mans 24 Hours is heading to auction with a £6.8m-£9m estimate. The GT40 will go under the hammer at the prestigious Monterey auction, which is held in conjunction with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, on the 24th August.
Chassis number P/1016 won third place at the 1966 Le Mans race that saw three Ford GT40’s lock out the podium. This GT40 has undergone a full restoration to original race specification and features a race-honed, naturally aspirated 7-litre V8, which produces 485bhp and 475lb ft of torque. This gold-liveried GT40 raced a further three times following its famous victory, before being retired in 1967.
This particular GT40 has won various accolades on the concours scene, such as being voted the ‘People’s Choice’ at the 2003 Pebble Beach concours. This GT40 will be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in California on the 24th August.
