The Top 10 Slowest Depreciating SUV’s 2025

Now that September is upon us and the weather has instantly taken a turn for the worse, many of us are thinking about changing that summer vehicle for one more suited to handle the autumnal wind and rain. The dream of driving down that summery B-road in a sports car or convertible seems like a distant memory and the appeal of an SUV to keep you cocooned for the next few months looks a far more attractive prospect.

With September already being one of the best months to buy a car and the obvious change in the weather that is happening, switching to an SUV might be a popular choice right now with many looking to change their vehicle as the seasons switch. Not only that but the fact that the SUV is bar far and away the most popular body style of car on the roads today, and not to mention the one that our customers fund more than any other, the choice of which make or model to buy is a plentiful one.

As a result we thought we’d put together a list of the slowest depreciating SUV’s on the market right now so that if you are looking to switch to an SUV at this time of year, you can at least look to protect the value of your purchase as best you can. As a guide, the depreciation is calculated based upon the industry standard of the vehicles’ average retained value after 3 years and 36,000 miles (Source: What Car?, Auto Express & Auto Trader). What’s more, the list is a mix of electric, hybrid and combustion engine vehicles, as well as a range of performance abilities and even price ranges, so hopefully there is something of interest for everyone.

10 – Volkswagen Tayron

The Volkswagen Tayron may not be a car you’ve seen on the roads or even heard of, it is a bit of a niche product. For those familiar with the car in which it is based upon, the popular Tiguan, the Tayron is a slightly larger version with the benefit of being able to seat seven people. Marginally taller and wider yet with 25cm more in length, the Tayron not only offers the increased seating possibilities but also has a larger boot for the extra passengers’ luggage, as well as the option of two hybrid versions. Think Defender 130 compared to the Defender 110 yet in a smaller package and for a fraction of the price.

The appeal and popularity of the Tiguan and the fact that the Tayron shares much of the looks and interior with its smaller sibling means that it is the perfect SUV for those looking for a little bit more space for the family on a tighter budget. With a starting price of £44,500 for the 1.5 eTSI eHybrid version, you can expect a retained value of 55.8% meaning after 3 years and 36,000 miles would have a resale value of around £24,800.

9 – Mercedes GLE Coupe

With the majority of SUV owners looking for space and practicality as one of the main reasons for their purchase, it seems slightly odd that the coupe bodied version of the popular Mercedes Benz GLE actually outperforms its more spacious and capacious ‘regular’ SUV sibling. Still, as far as coupe styled SUV’s go, the mid-sized Mercedes version is one of the better looking and less compromised versions on the market. Very well equipped, luxurious and offered in a range of power and trim levels, as well as petrol, diesel and hybrid powerplants, there really is something for every requirement if the GLE is in your price range.

Its relatively high price means that for a mid-level GLE 400e you can be expected to pay over £83,000 before any options or additional specification is selected. Despite that the model retains its value better than most with 56.6% of equity after 3 years and 36,000 miles equating to a resale value in the region of £47,000.

8 – Lexus LBX

A new name on these types of lists and one you might not necessarily expect to find there either, is Lexus. The stylish luxury arm of sister company Toyota, once a byword for refined and technology laden large saloon cars, these days Lexus have fully embraced the hybrid and electric SUV market and offer a wide range of models in this area. A brand that aren’t afraid to make their design language stand out from the crowd, especially in recent years, a Lexus is a stylish vehicle to be seen in these days. Inside the abundance of technology and the quality of the materials remains, it is no surprise it was previously named as a What Car? Car of the Year..

Despite the luxurious interior and the fact that the LBX has the usual technology and refinement on offer, it is actually the brand’s cheapest current model on sale. A 1.5-litre petrol-hybrid will cost just over £31,000 before any options, a steal for a badge that most people will assume has cost you a lot more to put on your driveway. After 3 years and 36,000 miles you can expcet your LBX to retain just under 57% of its value, with a resale price of just over £17,500. It may be one of the cheaper hybrid SUV’s on the market, but it’s definitely worth a look if it is in your price range.

7 – Range Rover Sport

Combining dynamic ability and luxurious comfort, the Range Rover Sport is one of the best all rounders out there. Whether it is the latest generation or the previous one, the recipe is the same and the results are very impressive. Its agility surprises for the size of the vehicle, yet it is just as capable of navigating tight urban streets and tackling long motorway cruises. As you’d expect from the brand, technology, functionality and the sheer number of options are seemingly endless and the cache that comes with the badge means you feel a sense of superiority wherever you go. Plus, by sharing most of the benefits as a ‘full-size’ Range Rover, yet at considerably less to buy, it is difficult to resist the appeal of the Range Rover Sport.

With an impressive range of frugal Diesel models, powerful petrol versions and best-of-both-worlds hybrid models, the Range Rover Sport range can suit your luxury SUV requirements with ease. Whereas the hybrid versions have always historically seen the best residual values, these days it is the turn of the Diesels to see the best return on your money. The entry-level 3.0-litre D250 S is actually the one to buy in this respect with a retained value of 58.3% after 3 years and 36,000 miles. This means that your £76,000 list price has returned a resale value of over £44,000, and despite its higher starting price, much more than many of its rivals can achieve.

6 – Land Rover Discovery Sport

Time after time the Land Rover Discovery Sport is revealed as one of the quickest pre-owned vehicles to fly off the used car forecourts. From the time an example is advertised to the time a deposit is taken, no car seems to perform as well as the Discovery Sport. It’s mix of brand prestige, genuine go-anywhere and all-weather ability, practicality in terms of space and the ability to seat 7 in comfort, and the car-like on-road performance means that the smallest of the Land Rover models is one of the most in-demand amongst potential buyers.

It is this demand that ensures residual values remain high and sees the smallest Land Rover outperform its bigger ‘full-size’ Discovery sibling as well as the more premium Range Rover models. Best performing of all is the P270e plug-in petrol-hybrid version. With a list price of £52,700 and a retained value after 3 years and 36,000 miles of 62.2%, you can expect a resale value of over £33,000.

5 – Porsche Macan

Despite the uncertainty over the EV market from manufacturers and potential car buyers alike, one vehicle that can offer the best of both worlds in this respect is the Porsche Macan. When the latest model was launched as an EV-only option, man thought it was possibly a step too soon. But if the Taycan has shown us anything it is that Porsche know how to make an electric car drive, handle and perform just like their combustion engine cars do. At the same time, their petrol powered Macan has remained on sale for much longer than they were intending, especially in the UK. This has meant that one of the best SUV’s to drive has been able to continue to be enjoyed by those in the know.

The Macan has always had driving appeal on it side, something that is quite often lacking with SUV’s, and certainly with electric cars of any kind. It is however the petrol model that sees the lowest drop in value of the Macan range, and it is the more driver-focused Macan T that performs best of all. With a starting price of £61,000, the model has a retained value of 62.4% meaning a resale value of almost £36,000 after 3 years and 36,000 miles. The Porsche brand is very specification sensitive so if you make sure your Macan has all the right optional extras, you could see that figure perform even better.

4 – Toyota Land Cruiser

Another make and model you might not have expected to see on this list, but this time almost everyone will have heard of, the Toyota Land Cruiser. The fact that a Land Cruiser has a reputation for bulletproof engineering, mechanical reliability and the fact it will seemingly outlive any other vehicle means that the appeal of the model is plain to see. Not only that, but the latest generation is styled to have more than a hint of the previous models that have gone before it, and has proved so popular that brand-new models are currently selling over list price thanks to the limited UK allocation being sold out.

The Land Cruiser is one of the oldest models in production, in fact since it was launched in 1951 there have only been 4 model iterations of the ‘Heavy Duty’ series in that whole time. The model that performs the best is the aptly named 2.8D ‘Invincible’, starting at just under £75,000 when new and retaining just under 63% of its value to equate to a resale price of just under £48,000.

3 – Land Rover Defender

If you want to go off road you get a Defender. That had always been the way for generation after generation. The problem was, it was on the road that the original Defender didn’t seem to feel at home. When the reborn Defender was launched it provided all the mud-plugging off road ability with a new found capability on the road too, and threw in a rather large splash of Land Rover/Range Rover technology and refinement too. It manages to blend enough styling cues from the original and a certain amount of utilitarian functionality at the same time, not an easy trick to pull off.

The sales figures and popularity of the new Defender speak for themselves with no sign of it losing its appeal anytime soon. The 130 offers extra space and the 110 is bar far and away the most popular model, yet it is the 90 that currently sees the best return on your purchase. The number of model types available means there is plenty to choose from, but it is the well equipped and sportier styled Defender 90 X-Dynamic SE in Diesel powered D350 form that retains up to 63% of its £65,000 list price after 3 years and 36,000 miles. This results in a resale value after this time of just over £41,000.

2 – Mercedes Benz G-Class

Retro influenced vehicles and restomods are all the rage right now, but no one has been doing it for longer than Mercedes Benz. Their military inspired G-Class for decades has been combining utilitarian looks with an abundance of power, the latest technology and Mercedes Benz luxury in a fashionable and stylish package. Its ability to not only blend all aspect together as one, but look just as ‘on trend’ covered in mud, pulling up outside a Michelin star restaurant or cruising down the motorway is a testament to its desirability and image power.

Whilst the flashy fire breathing G63 AMG ‘G-Wagon’ is what most people think of when it comes to the G-Class, it is the less popular G580 EQ fully-electric model that retains its value better after 3 years and 36,000 miles. With its AMG Line specification, its level of equipment and assistance systems is right up there with the very best, but its iconic boxy styling puts it miles ahead in the style stakes. The high £155,000 average list price does little to deter buyers, with 64.4% of the value being retained equalling a resale price of just under £100,000 when it comes time to sell it.

1 – Lamborghini Urus

For quite a few years now, the Lamborghini Urus has remained at the top of the SUV residual value retention charts and with good reason. Its ability to be the ‘ultimate one-car garage’ means it can be your supercar, luxury GT car, spacious SUV, track day toy, Winter snow conqueror and school run taxi all at the same time. There is a reason why the Urus is Lamborghini’s best-selling model of all time, and in the shortest time too, without the brand going against its beliefs just to meet sales figures. It still features futuristic angular styling, sounds and goes like a supercar should and looks just at home in bright orange, green or yellow than it does in black or grey.

The appeal and popularity of the Urus may have taken early critics by surprise, yet it is this factor than means residual values continue to remain as strong as ever. The fact that the hybrid variant has just been launched will only add to the appeal of the model, with those likely to be selling well over list price for some time when they are delivered to their first customers. Despite being the most expensive car on this list with a list price of £197,000 for the Urus S, it also retains a huge 69.8% of its value after 3 years and 36,000 miles resulting in a resale value of over £137,000. Nothing even comes close to the Urus for holding on to its value and it is easy to see why.
